Happy spring!
So, what’s happening in my corner of the world you ask? Well….
Two new galleries!! One is the Lizzardo Museum of Lapidary Art and the other gallery is of Lilacia Park.
First up I recently became a member of the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, found in Elmhurst, IL.
The Lizzadro Museum displays exquisite lapidary art. The collection begun by Joseph Lizzadro, who was chairperson of the board of Meade Electric in Chicago in 1929.
With intricate jade carvings, rocks, minerals and gemstones this museum rocks. Yes, pun intended.
Also throw in cute little dioramas as well and one has a fascinating little museum to visit on a rainy day.
Next up, I recently visited Lilacia Park in Lombard, IL. Another gem found in DuPage County, west of Chicago, was originally purchased in 1869 by Colonel and Mrs. Plum. They took the Grand Tour of Europe and it was in France they fell in love with the beautiful and fragrant lilacs and after returning to the states, started their lilac collection on their farm in Lombard.
After Mrs. Plum passed away in 1924, Colonel Plum, not as enamored by lilacs as Mrs. Plum had been, offered the lilacs to Joy Morton (of Morton Arboretum fame) to transplant at Thornhill Farm (now known as Morton Arboretum). Joy Morton encouraged Colonel Plum to leave the lilacs where they were as they had become a cherished part of Lombard.
After his death in 1927, Lilacia Park was donated to the village of Lombard for public use. Jens Jensen, the famous landscape artist was commissioned to design the Lombard Community Garden which today is known as Lilacia Park.
